WHO WE ARE
Don't Rely On Luck. Trust Your Neighbor.
Kismet Fence is a locally owned Licensed Contractor, No. 0446811126. We are based in Farmington, about 18 miles and 28 minutes from Goshen.
Goshen is a city of about 2,100 people east of Fayetteville, spread over roughly 11 square miles. Its fence code is short and specific: 6 feet is the limit at a home, a wood privacy fence has to show its good side to the neighbors, bare steel has to be galvanized or coated, and corner lots keep a 25-foot triangle clear.
We build to those four rules on every Goshen job, and the guide at the bottom of this page shows the section each one comes from.
Goshen’s code cares about how a fence is built, and so do we. It requires a fence to stay upright and in its original condition, with missing boards replaced by the same type and quality.
That is easier when the posts are set deep, so our post holes go deeper.
Wood gates get a metal frame and metal posts, because a sagging gate is the first thing to fall out of that standard.
If our workmanship fails, our warranty covers it for the lifetime of the fence.

CUSTOM WOOD & PRIVACY FENCES
Six feet is the limit for a fence at a Goshen home, measured from the finished grade to the highest point of the fence, so a standard six-foot privacy fence fits the rule exactly.
Posts on the inside: Goshen requires the posts and rails of a wood privacy fence to face in, or be hidden from the outside. That is how we build them. The exception is a neighbor who agrees to a plan with the posts on their side.
Styles: cedar or pressure-treated pine in side-by-side, board-on-board, shadowbox or horizontal, with dog-ear pickets standard.
Steel posts: the steel posts we use are galvanized or coated, which is what Goshen requires of exposed steel.
Where we slow down: on a corner lot, where nothing between 2 and 8 feet tall can block the 25-foot triangle at the intersection.
See our cedar fences, pressure-treated pine fences, horizontal fences and steel post upgrade.
ORNAMENTAL STEEL & ALUMINUM
An open metal fence is the usual way to fence near a corner without blocking a driver’s view, and Goshen’s 6-foot limit applies to it the same as wood.
Finish: Goshen requires exposed steel that is not galvanized to have a color finish coat and rust protection. Black ornamental steel comes with a factory finish coat, which is what that rule asks for.
Styles: flat top, extended picket and puppy picket aluminum, and welded steel in 4, 5 and 6 foot heights.
Entrances: Goshen allows an entrance to rise to 10 feet for up to 40 feet on either side of it, so there is room for taller columns or gates at a drive.

RESIDENTIAL & COMMERCIAL CHAIN LINK FENCES
Goshen counts an animal as at large unless it is inside an adequate fence or enclosure, or on a leash with someone in control. Chain link is the most affordable fence that settles the question.
Homes: galvanized mesh meets Goshen’s steel rule as it is, and black vinyl-coated mesh adds a finish that fades into a tree line.
Businesses: commercial fences in Goshen need a fence permit, a site plan and a final inspection, and they cannot carry barbed wire, razor wire or electric fence. We build heavier commercial mesh with privacy slats to those rules.
Pools: standard 2-inch chain link is too open for a pool barrier, so pool runs get 1-1/4-inch mesh.
VINYL & COMPOSITE
Goshen expects a fence to keep its original finish and stay upright, and to have missing boards replaced with the same material. Vinyl and composite make that rule easy, because there is no finish to wear off and no board to rot.
Vinyl: solid privacy panels in white or tan, heavier in the wall than what the big-box stores carry.
Composite: Trex, SimTek, TimberTech and FenceTrac systems, including horizontal board looks.
Height: the same 6-foot limit applies, measured from finished grade to the top of the fence.

FARM & RANCH FENCES
Goshen’s animal code treats horses, cattle, goats and fowl the same as dogs: an animal is at large unless it is inside an adequate fence or enclosure.
What we build: woven field fence, no-climb horse fence, high-tensile wire, welded pipe and livestock panels.
Barbed wire and electric: Goshen bans barbed wire, razor wire and electric fence in its commercial fence rules. Its zoning code does not add a ban for homes or farms, so we confirm wire fences with City Hall, (479) 442-9128, before quoting.
Height: the 6-foot limit in the zoning code applies to farm fence too.
GATE AUTOMATION
Goshen gives entrances their own rule. A gate and the fence beside it can rise to 10 feet for up to 40 feet on either side of the entrance, where the rest of the fence stops at 6.
Gate types: walk gates, estate swing gates, sliding gates and cantilever gates.
Openers: solar or hard-wired, with keypad, remote or phone control, and an audio or video intercom if you want one.
Before we set posts: a drive gate at a corner still has to stay out of the 25-foot sight triangle, so we lay out the entrance first and the fence second.

Goshen Fence Rules Code & Permit Guide
Goshen keeps its fence rules in its Municipal Code, codified through October 2025. It caps home fences at 6 feet and sets rules for how a fence is built and kept up. This is what the code says, and where it came from.
Read the CodeWe confirm the permit question with City Hall, (479) 442-9128, before every job.
How Tall Can My Fence Be?
Six feet at a home, measured from the finished grade.
How tall can my fence be?
6 feet, measured from the finished grade to the highest point of the fence (Sec. 14.04.11).
Are there any exceptions?
Entrances and courts. An entrance can be up to 10 feet tall for up to 40 feet on either side, unless the City Council approves otherwise, and fencing around tennis courts and other recreational amenities is exempt from the height limit.
Corners And Setbacks
Goshen protects drivers’ views at intersections.
What about corner lots?
Keep a 25-foot triangle open. On a corner lot where two-way streets meet, nothing between 2 and 8 feet above the curb can block vision inside the triangle formed by the street-side property lines and a line joining points 25 feet from the corner (Sec. 14.04.11).
Can my fence go in a setback?
Yes, if visibility stays clear. Fences and walls are allowed within setbacks as long as they do not block visibility (Sec. 14.04.10).
How It Has To Be Built
Goshen sets three construction rules that most towns leave out.
Which side faces out?
The finished side. Wood privacy fences in residential districts have to keep posts and rails on the inside or hidden from view. The exceptions are a fence next to a nonresidential district, or a neighbor who agrees to a plan with posts on their side.
Do steel posts need a finish?
Galvanized or coated. Any exposed steel that is not galvanized needs a color finish coat and protection against rust.
How does a fence have to be kept up?
As built. Fences have to stay upright and keep their original finish, and missing boards, pickets or posts have to be replaced promptly with the same type and quality.
Permits
Goshen’s fence permit rule sits in its commercial landscaping rules.
Do I need a permit for a fence at my home?
We check with the city. Goshen’s fence permit rule is written into its landscaping rules for commercial districts (Ch. 11.30), and its zoning code does not add one for homes. The state residential code exempts fences up to 7 feet, so we confirm with City Hall, (479) 442-9128, before every Goshen job.
What about commercial property?
A permit and an inspection. In commercial districts, Goshen requires a fence permit with a site plan, a final inspection, an 8-foot maximum and no barbed wire, razor wire or electric fence (Sec. 11.30.14).
Neighbors, Businesses And Animals
Two more rules that involve a fence.
What if my home backs up to a business?
The business screens it. A B1 or B2 business that borders a home or residential district has to put up and maintain landscaping or an opaque fence at least 6 feet tall (Sec. 14.04.08).
Do my animals have to be fenced?
An adequate fence or enclosure, or a leash. Goshen counts an animal as at large when it is not in an adequate enclosure or fence and not on a leash under someone’s control (Sec. 6.01.01).
Pools
Goshen’s code leaves pool barriers to the state code, which sends them to the International Swimming Pool and Spa Code.
Does a pool need a permit?
Plan on one. The state residential code exempts only small prefabricated pools under 24 inches deep, and the barrier has to meet the rules below.
How tall does a pool fence have to be?
48 inches, measured on the outside of the fence, and that height has to hold for 3 feet out from the fence so nothing outside becomes a step up.
How big can the gaps be?
Smaller than a 4-inch ball. No opening may let a 4-inch sphere through, and the gap under the fence can be no more than 2 inches over grass or gravel, or 4 inches over concrete.
Can I use chain link around a pool?
Only small mesh. Chain link openings can be no larger than 1-3/4 inches, so standard 2-inch mesh does not qualify. We use 1-1/4-inch pool mesh.
Does it matter which side the rails are on?
Yes. If the tops of the horizontal rails are less than 45 inches apart, the rails go on the pool side and pickets can be no more than 1-3/4 inches apart. With rails 45 inches or more apart, pickets can be up to 4 inches apart.
What does the gate need?
Self-closing and self-latching. It must open away from the pool and take a lock, with the latch release at least 54 inches up unless the release is on the pool side. On a double gate, one leaf stays secured in place.
