WHO WE ARE
Don't Rely On Luck. Trust Your Neighbor.
Kismet Fence is a locally owned Licensed Contractor, No. 0446811126. Our shop is in Farmington, about 47 miles and 49 minutes from Gravette.
Gravette is a Benton County city of about 3,500 people, and it has one of the most detailed fence codes in the area. Nearly every fence needs a permit and a final inspection, single-family homes included. Front-yard fences have to stay low and see-through, a fence along a street needs a gate for mowing, and the pool rules are the city’s own.
We pull the permit, build to Sec. 7.1 of the Unified Development Code, and request the final inspection when the fence is done.
In Gravette an inspector looks at the finished fence. The city issues a certificate of compliance only if the fence matches the permit and the code.
Our post holes are dug deeper, so the line stays straight long after the inspector leaves.
Wood gates hang on metal frames and metal posts so they keep swinging true.
And our workmanship warranty stays with the fence for its lifetime.

CUSTOM WOOD & PRIVACY FENCES
Gravette allows fences up to eight feet above average grade behind the front of the house, so a six-foot privacy fence is well inside the limit. Every one needs a permit and a final inspection, and we pull the permit.
Finished side out: where a fence can be seen from the street, Gravette wants the finished face outward and the posts on the inside. We build them that way.
Styles: cedar or pressure-treated pine, side-by-side, board-on-board, shadowbox or horizontal, topped with dog-ear pickets.
Along a street: the fence stays 5 feet back from the right-of-way, and on most lots it needs one gate so the strip between the fence and the pavement can be mowed.
Not in the front yard: a solid wood fence cannot go in front of the house, because front-yard fencing in Gravette cannot be opaque.
Posts: PostMaster steel posts are an option where you want the frame to outlast the pickets.
See our cedar fences, pressure-treated pine fences, horizontal fences and steel post upgrade.
ORNAMENTAL STEEL & ALUMINUM
The front yard is where Gravette is strict, and where ornamental metal earns its place. A front-yard fence cannot be solid, decorative fencing is allowed up to 36 inches, and nothing over 48 inches can sit in front of the house.
Corners: inside the sight triangle at an intersection, fencing is capped at 30 inches.
Styles: flat top, extended picket and puppy picket aluminum, plus black welded steel.
Pools: Gravette’s pool rule bans any opening a 4-inch ball could pass through and anything a child could climb like a ladder, which is what a picket pool fence is designed around.

RESIDENTIAL & COMMERCIAL CHAIN LINK FENCES
Chain link in Gravette goes through the same permit and inspection as any other fence, and follows the same rule about staying 5 feet off the street right-of-way.
Back yards and dog runs: galvanized or black vinyl-coated mesh, up to the 8-foot limit.
Around a pool: Gravette caps chain link openings at 1-1/4 inches, tighter than the state code, so pool runs get 1-1/4-inch pool mesh.
Businesses: heavier commercial mesh with privacy slats and security options. Razor wire is allowed only in the A-1 agricultural district.
VINYL & COMPOSITE
Vinyl and composite go through the same Gravette permit as wood, with the finished face out toward the street and the posts inside.
Vinyl: solid privacy panels in white or tan, with a thicker wall than big-box panels.
Composite: Trex, SimTek, TimberTech and FenceTrac, for privacy without staining.
Where it can go: side and back yards, up to 8 feet. Solid panels cannot go in the front yard, because front-yard fencing has to be open.

FARM & RANCH FENCES
Gravette’s fence section does not apply in the A-1 agricultural district, apart from its rules on razor wire, barbed wire and electric fence near sidewalks and streets. We confirm the zoning before we quote a farm job.
Electric fence: allowed only in the A-1 and R-E districts, kept 5 feet from a public sidewalk, or 4 feet from the right-of-way where there is no sidewalk.
In town: farm fence products in a residential zone need Planning Commission approval first.
What we build: field fence, no-climb horse fence, high-tensile wire, welded pipe and livestock panels.
GATE AUTOMATION
Gravette writes a gate into its fence code. A fence along a street needs one gate opening per lot, so the strip between the fence and the pavement can be mowed. Corner lots are exempt, and so are neighborhoods whose HOA tells the city it maintains that strip.
Gate types: walk gates, estate swing gates, sliding gates and cantilever gates.
Openers: solar or hard-wired openers with keypad, remote or phone control.
Driveway gates: a gate across the front of the lot falls under the front-yard rules, so we design it open rather than solid and keep it 5 feet back from the right-of-way.

Gravette Fence Rules Code & Permit Guide
Gravette keeps its fence rules in its Unified Development Code. It requires a permit and a final inspection for nearly every fence, and it sets its own rules for front yards, easements and pools. This is what the code says, and where it came from.
Read the CodePermit and final inspection required. We pull the permit for you.
Permits
Gravette requires a permit and a final inspection for almost every fence, including at single-family homes.
Do I need a permit for a fence?
Yes. Gravette requires a fence permit before a fence is built or replaced, and that includes single-family homes. When the fence is done, the city inspects it and issues a certificate of compliance (Sec. 7.1.3).
What counts as a new fence?
More than you might think. The rules cover new fences, extensions, and replacements that change the size, location or material, or that replace more than half the fence. Fences approved as part of a subdivision plat do not need a separate permit.
Can I fix part of my fence without a permit?
Yes, under half. Replacing less than half the length is exempt, as long as the repaired part does not block the corner sight triangle or a drainage way, sit in an easement that needs gated access, or cross onto a neighbor’s property.
What about agricultural land?
The A-1 district is exempt from Gravette’s fence section, except the rules for razor wire, barbed wire and electric fences near sidewalks and the street.
How Tall Can My Fence Be?
Up to 8 feet behind the house. The front yard has tighter limits.
How tall can my fence be?
8 feet above average grade (Sec. 7.1.5).
What can go in my front yard?
Low and open. A fence over 48 inches cannot go in the front yard or closer to the street than the front of the house. Decorative fencing up to 36 inches is allowed in front yards, and front yard fencing cannot be solid (Sec. 7.1.4).
What about corner lots?
30 inches at the corner. Fencing inside the sight triangle at an intersection is capped at 30 inches so drivers can see.
Where Can My Fence Go?
Gravette spells out placement along streets and in easements.
Does my fence have to be on my property?
Yes. Every fence has to be on private property, built with the owner’s consent, and cannot cross onto a neighbor’s land. The code makes the owner and installer responsible for finding the lines.
How close to the street can it go?
5 feet from the right-of-way. Fences next to a public street have to stay at least 5 feet back from the right-of-way.
Can my fence go in a utility easement?
Yes, with a gate. Fences are allowed in utility easements at the owner’s risk, and a fence that encloses an easement needs a gate so crews can get in. Walls used as fences are not allowed there.
What about drainage and access easements?
Carefully. A fence cannot slow stormwater or cross an open drainage channel, and fences in drainage easements are approved case by case. No fence can cross a public access easement.
Finished Side, Gates And Materials
A few design rules apply to every new fence.
Which side faces out?
The finished side, wherever it can be seen from a public street. Posts and rails go on the inside or have to be built into the finished face.
Do I need a gate on the street side?
Usually, yes. A fence along a street needs one gate per lot so the strip between the fence and the pavement can be mowed. Corner lots are exempt, and so are neighborhoods whose HOA sends the city a letter saying it maintains that strip.
Can I use farm fencing in town?
Only with approval. Agricultural fence products and non-standard materials in residential zones need Planning Commission approval.
Razor Wire And Electric Fences
Both are limited to farm-type districts.
Can I use razor wire?
Only in the A-1 district, kept at least 5 feet from a public sidewalk, or 4 feet from the right-of-way where there is no sidewalk.
Can I put up an electric fence?
Only in the A-1 and R-E districts, with the same distances from sidewalks and the street. Underground electric pet fences are allowed anywhere.
Pools
Gravette writes its own pool fence rules into its development code.
How tall does a pool fence have to be?
At least 48 inches, and no more than 96. The gap under the fence can be no more than 2 inches (Sec. 7.1.7).
How big can the openings be?
Too small for a 4-inch ball, with nothing on the outside a child could climb like a ladder. Chain link openings cannot exceed 1¼ inches, which is the pool mesh we use.
What does the gate need?
Self-closing and self-latching, swinging away from the pool. An outside latch has to be at least 54 inches up. Gates over 5 feet wide for equipment are exempt if they stay locked.
Does a pond need a pool fence?
If it holds water. A fence around a detention or retention pond with at least 2 feet of standing water has to meet the same pool rules.
