WHO WE ARE
Don't Rely On Luck. Trust Your Neighbor.
Kismet Fence is a locally owned Licensed Contractor, No. 0446811126. Our shop is in Farmington, about 8 miles and 12 minutes from Greenland.
Greenland is a small, mostly residential city of about 1,200 people on Highway 71, next to Drake Field and just south of Fayetteville. Its fence code is one of the shortest we work under. A fence here needs no permit, has no height cap and can sit inside a setback, as long as it does not block the view at an intersection or a driveway.
We read that code ourselves, section by section. The guide at the bottom of this page shows where each rule comes from.
No permit means no city inspection. In Greenland nobody from the city signs off on a fence, so the build standard is ours to keep. We hold it the same here as in towns that send an inspector.
We dig our post holes deeper, because the post is what keeps a fence standing.
Every wood gate we build hangs on a metal frame and metal posts, so it does not sag.
Our workmanship warranty lasts for the lifetime of the fence.

CUSTOM WOOD & PRIVACY FENCES
Greenland sets no maximum fence height and does not require a fence permit, so a six-foot privacy fence can go up with no city paperwork. For anything over seven feet we check with City Hall first, because the state code’s permit exemption for fences stops at seven feet.
Styles: cedar or pressure-treated pine, built side-by-side, board-on-board, shadowbox or horizontal. Dog-ear pickets are standard.
Posts and gates: PostMaster steel posts are an upgrade if you want the frame to outlast the boards. Gates get a metal frame and metal posts either way.
What we check on a Greenland lot: the view from your driveway and any street corner. That is the main place the city limits a tall solid fence.
See our cedar fences, pressure-treated pine fences, horizontal fences and steel post upgrade.
ORNAMENTAL STEEL & ALUMINUM
In Greenland the reason to choose metal is the view, not a height rule. The city has no front-yard height limit, but nothing in a yard may block visibility at an intersection or where a driveway meets the street (Sec. 14.04.05).
A fence you can see through is the simple answer. Black aluminum or welded steel can run across the front of a lot and around a corner while drivers still see what is coming.
Styles: flat top, extended picket and puppy picket in aluminum, plus welded commercial-grade steel.
Where we use it in Greenland: front yards, corner lots, driveway entries and pool enclosures.

RESIDENTIAL & COMMERCIAL CHAIN LINK FENCES
Greenland makes it unlawful to let a dog run at large, and a fence is one of the controls its code names (Sec. 6.04.01 and 6.04.02). Chain link is the lowest-cost fence that does that job.
Back yards and dog runs: galvanized or black vinyl-coated mesh. The black coating blends into a tree line, which is why most back yards choose it.
Businesses: heavier commercial mesh with security options and privacy slats. One Greenland rule to know: where a business borders a home, the required screen is an opaque wood or masonry fence at least 6 feet tall, and chain link does not count as that screen (Sec. 14.04.07).
Around a pool: standard 2-inch mesh does not meet the pool code, so we use 1-1/4-inch pool mesh.
VINYL & COMPOSITE
Vinyl and composite follow the same Greenland rules as wood: no permit, no height cap and clear sightlines at the street.
Vinyl: solid privacy panels in white or tan, with a heavier wall than big-box panels.
Composite: Trex, SimTek, TimberTech and FenceTrac, for a board look that never needs stain.
Why owners pick it: it does not rot, and there is nothing to stain or seal.
The one Greenland standard: a fence may not detract from the look of the buildings around it or become a safety hazard (Sec. 11.04.05). A fence that stays straight and keeps its color makes that easy to meet.

FARM & RANCH FENCES
Greenland allows livestock inside the city limits, and its animal code says how they have to be fenced. Horses and cows are kept on an enclosed pasture with about an acre or more for each animal. Hogs, goats and sheep need a parcel larger than one acre and an enclosed pasture (Sec. 6.08.01 and 6.08.02).
What we build for it: woven field fence, high-tensile wire, no-climb horse fence, welded pipe and livestock panels.
Barbed wire and electric fence: Greenland’s fence rules do not name either one. The general rule still applies, so no fence can create a safety hazard or be dangerous to life, health or property.
Chickens: fowl may not run at large in Greenland, so a hen yard has to be enclosed (Sec. 6.08.05).
GATE AUTOMATION
A driveway gate is where Greenland’s visibility rule matters most. Nothing in a yard may block the view where a drive meets the street.
Gate types: walk gates, estate swing gates, sliding gates and cantilever gates.
Openers: solar or hard-wired, run from a keypad, a remote or your phone, with audio and video intercoms available.
Plan it early: an open picket or pipe gate set back from the road keeps the view clear for a driver pulling out. Greenland does not require a fence permit, but a hard-wired opener may need an electrical permit, and we check that with City Hall.

Greenland Fence Rules Code & Permit Guide
Greenland keeps its fence rules in its Municipal Code. They are some of the lightest in Northwest Arkansas: no height limit, no fence permit and one rule about visibility. This is what the code says, and where it came from.
Read the CodeNo fence permit. Questions go to Greenland City Hall, (479) 521-5760.
How Tall Can My Fence Be?
Greenland does not set a maximum height. What it protects is visibility.
Is there a height limit?
No set maximum. Greenland’s code does not cap fence height. It allows fences in setbacks as long as they do not block visibility (Sec. 14.04.09).
What can go in my front yard?
No separate front-yard limit. One rule covers every yard: no structure or planting may interfere with visibility at an intersection or where a driveway meets the street (Sec. 14.04.05).
Permits
Greenland’s code says outright that fences do not need a permit.
Do I need a permit for a fence?
No. Greenland’s building code says a permit is not needed for fences (Sec. 11.04.05).
Are there any limits at all?
Three general ones. A fence cannot detract from the appearance of the buildings around it, create a safety hazard, or be dangerous to life, health or property.
What about a fence over 7 feet?
We check first. Greenland’s own code does not set a height at which a fence needs a permit, but the state residential code only exempts fences up to 7 feet (R105.2). For anything taller we confirm with City Hall before we build.
What if my lot is in the floodplain?
That is a separate question. Greenland has a Flood Damage Prevention Code (Ch. 14.08) and its own floodplain permit. The West Fork of the White River runs past Greenland, so if your lot is in a mapped flood zone we check with City Hall before we dig.
Neighbors And Businesses
Greenland puts the screening burden on businesses next to homes.
What if my home backs up to a business?
The business has to screen it. In Greenland’s commercial and light industrial districts (C-1, C-2, C-3 and I-1), a business that borders a home or residential district has to put up and maintain an opaque wood or masonry fence at least 6 feet tall (Sec. 14.04.07).
Dogs
Greenland’s animal code counts a fence as control.
Does my dog have to be fenced?
Fenced, leashed, or kept on your property. Greenland counts a dog as at large only when it is not controlled by a fence, leash, chain or other restraint, and an unleashed dog that stays on its owner’s property is not at large (Sec. 6.04.01). Letting a dog run at large is unlawful (Sec. 6.04.02).
Livestock And Chickens
Greenland allows farm animals in the city, with a fencing rule for each.
Can I keep horses or cows?
Yes, on an enclosed pasture. Greenland allows horses and cows where they are kept on an enclosed pasture with about 1 acre or more for each animal (Sec. 6.08.01).
What about goats, sheep or hogs?
On more than an acre, and fenced. They are allowed on parcels larger than 1 acre, as long as they are kept on an enclosed pasture and do not run at large (Sec. 6.08.02).
Do chickens have to be fenced?
They cannot run at large. Greenland makes it unlawful to let chickens, turkeys or other fowl run at large, and roosters are not allowed on properties under 1 acre. Properties over 1 acre that were annexed by a public vote are exempt from the at-large rule (Sec. 6.08.05).
Pools
Greenland’s code leaves pool barriers to the state code, which sends them to the International Swimming Pool and Spa Code.
Does a pool need a permit?
Plan on one. The state residential code exempts only small prefabricated pools under 24 inches deep, and the barrier has to meet the rules below.
How tall does a pool fence have to be?
48 inches, measured on the outside of the fence, and that height has to hold for 3 feet out from the fence so nothing outside becomes a step up.
How big can the gaps be?
Smaller than a 4-inch ball. No opening may let a 4-inch sphere through, and the gap under the fence can be no more than 2 inches over grass or gravel, or 4 inches over concrete.
Can I use chain link around a pool?
Only small mesh. Chain link openings can be no larger than 1-3/4 inches, so standard 2-inch mesh does not qualify. We use 1-1/4-inch pool mesh.
Does it matter which side the rails are on?
Yes. If the tops of the horizontal rails are less than 45 inches apart, the rails go on the pool side and pickets can be no more than 1-3/4 inches apart. With rails 45 inches or more apart, pickets can be up to 4 inches apart.
What does the gate need?
Self-closing and self-latching. It must open away from the pool and take a lock, with the latch release at least 54 inches up unless the release is on the pool side. On a double gate, one leaf stays secured in place.
