WHO WE ARE
Don't Rely On Luck. Trust Your Neighbor.
Kismet Fence is a locally owned Licensed Contractor, No. 0446811126. Our shop is in Farmington, about 33 miles and 47 minutes from Huntsville.
Huntsville is the Madison County seat, a city of about 2,900 people. Its zoning code allows fences up to 8 feet, wants the posts and rails on the inside, requires bare steel to be galvanized or coated, and bans barbed wire and electric fence on lots under 2 acres.
One thing sets Huntsville apart: the city’s street department will mark the sight triangle on a corner lot, and we call them before we build on one.
Huntsville puts a price on a fence that breaks its rules. A violation is a $100 fine with 14 days to fix it, then $200 and $300 for the next two.
We would rather build it right once. That starts below ground, with post holes dug deeper.
Each wood gate gets a metal frame and metal posts to keep it from sagging.
Our workmanship warranty covers the fence for its lifetime.

CUSTOM WOOD & PRIVACY FENCES
Huntsville allows fences up to eight feet, and the Planning Commission can approve more. A six-foot privacy fence is comfortably inside the limit.
Posts inside: in residential districts the posts and rails face in or stay hidden from outside, which is how we build. The exception is a fence next to a nonresidential district, or a neighbor who agrees to posts on their side.
Styles: cedar or pressure-treated pine in side-by-side, board-on-board, shadowbox or horizontal, with dog-ear pickets.
Steel posts: the steel posts we use are galvanized or coated, as Huntsville requires of exposed steel.
Corner lots: a 25-foot triangle stays open between 2 and 8 feet above the curb. The street department marks it at (479) 738-6607.
Permit: Huntsville’s code does not list a fence permit, and the state code exempts fences up to 7 feet. We confirm at City Hall before we build.
See our cedar fences, pressure-treated pine fences, horizontal fences and steel post upgrade.
ORNAMENTAL STEEL & ALUMINUM
On a Huntsville corner lot, nothing between 2 and 8 feet tall can block the view inside the 25-foot triangle. An open metal fence is the usual choice near a corner, and we have the street department mark the line first.
Finish: exposed steel that is not galvanized needs a color finish coat against rust. Black ornamental steel comes finished.
Styles: flat top, extended picket and puppy picket aluminum, and welded steel.
Height: up to 8 feet, the same as any other fence in Huntsville.

RESIDENTIAL & COMMERCIAL CHAIN LINK FENCES
Galvanized chain link meets Huntsville’s steel rule without any added coating, which makes it the simplest fence to get right here.
Residential: galvanized or black vinyl-coated mesh for back yards and dog runs, up to 8 feet.
Commercial: heavier mesh with privacy slats and security options. Barbed wire is off the table on any lot under 2 acres.
Next to homes: a C-2 business that borders a home has to put up an opaque wood or masonry fence at least 6 feet tall, so chain link alone does not meet that screen.
Pools: pool runs use 1-1/4-inch mesh, because standard 2-inch mesh is too open for the pool code.
VINYL & COMPOSITE
Huntsville requires a fence to stay upright and keep its original finish, and a violation carries a fine. Vinyl and composite have no finish to lose.
Vinyl: solid privacy panels in white or tan, heavier than big-box panels.
Composite: Trex, SimTek, TimberTech and FenceTrac.
Height: up to 8 feet, with the posts on the inside like any other residential fence.

FARM & RANCH FENCES
Huntsville sets its wire rule by lot size. Barbed wire and electric fence are prohibited on any lot under 2 acres.
Two acres or more: the ban does not apply.
What we build: woven field fence, no-climb horse fence, high-tensile wire, welded pipe and livestock panels.
Steel: pipe and steel posts that are not galvanized need a color finish coat against rust.
GATE AUTOMATION
A gate is part of the fence under Huntsville’s code, so it follows the same 8-foot limit and the same corner triangle.
Gate types: walk gates, estate swing gates, sliding gates and cantilever gates.
Openers: solar or hard-wired, with keypad, remote or phone control.
On a corner: a drive gate near an intersection stays out of the triangle the street department marks.

Huntsville Fence Rules Code & Permit Guide
Huntsville keeps its fence rules in Title 14 of its City Code. It allows fences up to 8 feet and sets rules for how a fence is built, kept up and placed on a corner. This is what the code says, and where it came from.
Read the CodeCorner lot? The street department marks the sight triangle: (479) 738-6607.
How Tall Can My Fence Be?
Up to 8 feet, and the Planning Commission can approve more.
How tall can my fence be?
8 feet, unless the Planning Commission approves more. Fencing around tennis courts and other recreational amenities is exempt (Sec. 14.04.21).
Can my fence go in a setback?
Yes, if visibility stays clear. Signs, fences and walls are allowed within setbacks as long as they do not block visibility (Sec. 14.04.20).
Corner Lots
Huntsville keeps a triangle open at intersections, and its street department will mark it for you.
What about corner lots?
Keep a 25-foot triangle open. On a corner lot where two-way streets meet, nothing between 2 and 8 feet above the curb can block vision inside the triangle formed by the street-side property lines and a line joining points 25 feet from the corner (Sec. 14.04.21).
Who marks the corner?
The street department. Huntsville’s street department marks how far a fence or hedge has to stay from the corner. Call (479) 738-6607 before building on a corner lot.
How It Has To Be Built
Huntsville sets three construction rules that most towns leave out.
Which side faces out?
The finished side. Fences in residential districts have to keep posts and rails on the inside or hidden from view. The exceptions are a fence next to a nonresidential district, or a neighbor who agrees to a plan with posts on their side.
Do steel posts need a finish?
Galvanized or coated. Any exposed steel that is not galvanized needs a color finish coat to protect it from rust and corrosion.
How does a fence have to be kept up?
As built. Fences have to stay upright and keep their original finish, and missing boards, pickets or posts have to be replaced promptly with the same type and quality.
Barbed Wire, Electric Fences And Fines
Wire fences depend on lot size, and the fence rules carry fines.
Can I use barbed wire or an electric fence?
Only on 2 acres or more. Huntsville prohibits barbed wire and electric fences on any lot under 2 acres (Sec. 14.04.21).
What happens if a fence breaks the rules?
Fines that climb. A violation carries a $100 fine with 14 days to fix it, then $200 for a second offense and $300 for a third.
Permits And Neighbors
Huntsville’s code does not list a fence permit.
Do I need a permit for a fence?
We check with the city. Huntsville’s code does not list a fence permit, and the state residential code exempts fences up to 7 feet. All building permits are issued at City Hall, so we confirm there before we build.
What if my home backs up to a business?
The business screens it. A C-2 business that borders a home or residential district has to put up and maintain an opaque wood or masonry fence at least 6 feet tall (Sec. 14.04.12).
Pools
Huntsville’s code leaves pool barriers to the state code, which sends them to the International Swimming Pool and Spa Code.
Does a pool need a permit?
Plan on one. The state residential code exempts only small prefabricated pools under 24 inches deep, and the barrier has to meet the rules below.
How tall does a pool fence have to be?
48 inches, measured on the outside of the fence, and that height has to hold for 3 feet out from the fence so nothing outside becomes a step up.
How big can the gaps be?
Smaller than a 4-inch ball. No opening may let a 4-inch sphere through, and the gap under the fence can be no more than 2 inches over grass or gravel, or 4 inches over concrete.
Can I use chain link around a pool?
Only small mesh. Chain link openings can be no larger than 1-3/4 inches, so standard 2-inch mesh does not qualify. We use 1-1/4-inch pool mesh.
Does it matter which side the rails are on?
Yes. If the tops of the horizontal rails are less than 45 inches apart, the rails go on the pool side and pickets can be no more than 1-3/4 inches apart. With rails 45 inches or more apart, pickets can be up to 4 inches apart.
What does the gate need?
Self-closing and self-latching. It must open away from the pool and take a lock, with the latch release at least 54 inches up unless the release is on the pool side. On a double gate, one leaf stays secured in place.
