WHO WE ARE

Don't Rely On Luck. Trust Your Neighbor.

Kismet Fence is a locally owned Licensed Contractor, No. 0446811126. Our shop is in Farmington, about 13 miles and 18 minutes from West Fork.

West Fork is a city of about 2,300 people on the West Fork of the White River, with a high bluff along the river. That shows up in its fence code. There is no height limit for an ordinary residential fence and no permit under seven feet, but near the top of a bluff a fence has to stay 30 feet back, and in a mapped flood zone a fence counts as development.

We check the bluff line and the flood map before we quote a West Fork fence.

West Fork’s code is mostly about where a fence stands, not how tall it is. Bluffs and flood zones are the two places it gets specific.

Once the location is settled, the fence has to hold, so we dig our post holes deeper.

Each wood gate is built with a metal frame and metal posts so it will not sag.

The workmanship warranty lasts the lifetime of the fence.

After getting a few quotes on an aluminum fence, we decided to go with Kismet. They came in at a very competitive price, their communication was timely, and they were reliable with our time. They clearly laid out the project, materials, and timing and action. All delivered as outlined. Due to some miscommunication, there was a slight discrepancy in the execution of the project. Once it was elevated, they immediately addressed it the next day and corrected the issue without adding cost. They operate with integrity, and I would highly recommend using them.

We had wanted some type of privacy screening to hide our propane tank and kayaks but didn’t really have and Idea of what would look best or how to go about it . After meeting with Alex Duenas upon his recommendation we went with a shadow Box style . After studying the our home and landscape Alex recomendad the shadow box be ran horizontally instead of Vertically. The siding on our house is a horizontal run so he felt it would be best suited . John and Elias if Kismet Fence were the installers . They started at 10 on Saturday morning and worked to completion by 7:00 pm. Sat evening . John and Elias’s craftsman ship is impeccable and when they cleaned the area after I didn’t find a scrap of lumber or a nail or screw anywhere . I highly recommend kismet Fence and craftsman John and Elias . We could not be happier . Thank you Alex, John and Elias for a superb job !!!

Horizontal cedar privacy fence with metal posts

CUSTOM WOOD & PRIVACY FENCES

West Fork’s code sets no fence height for an ordinary lot and asks for no permit under seven feet, so a six-foot privacy fence needs no city paperwork. We still confirm with the Building Inspector before we build.

Near a bluff: in the bluff protection zone a fence can be up to 8 feet tall and has to sit at least 30 feet back from the top of the bluff.

Flood zones: in a mapped flood zone, building a fence counts as development and goes through the city’s floodplain rules first.

Covenants: a subdivision can set a height the city does not, so we read yours before quoting.

Styles: board-on-board, shadowbox, side-by-side or horizontal, in cedar or pressure-treated pine with dog-ear tops.

Posts and gates: metal frames and metal posts on wood gates, and PostMaster steel posts if you want them.

See our cedar fences, pressure-treated pine fences, horizontal fences and steel post upgrade.

ORNAMENTAL STEEL & ALUMINUM

West Fork requires safe sight distances at intersections and driveways, and its yard rules keep fences from blocking visibility. An open metal fence is the easy way to fence a corner or a front yard inside those rules.

Styles: puppy picket, extended picket and flat top aluminum, plus welded steel in black.

Near water: if the lot is in a mapped flood zone, the fence goes through the floodplain rules before it is built, whatever it is made of.

Pools: a pool barrier in West Fork is built to the state pool code.

VINYL & COMPOSITE

Vinyl and composite follow the same West Fork rules as wood: no set height on an ordinary lot, no permit under seven feet, and extra care near bluffs and flood zones.

Vinyl: privacy panels in tan or white with a heavier wall than big-box panels.

Composite: Trex, SimTek, FenceTrac and TimberTech.

Dumpster screens: the code calls for treated lumber or cedar on a dumpster screening fence, so vinyl is for the yard, not that enclosure.

Farm & Ranch Fences

FARM & RANCH FENCES

West Fork’s zoning code names standard farm fences, such as woven wire, as allowed fencing, even near a bluff as long as they stay 30 feet back from the top.

Flood zones: in a mapped floodplain a fence counts as development under the city’s flood rules, so we check the map before we set a post.

What we build: woven field fence, no-climb horse fence, high-tensile wire, welded pipe and livestock panels.

GATE AUTOMATION

West Fork requires safe sight distances where a driveway meets the road, so that is the first thing we check on a drive gate.

Gate types: walk gates and swing gates, plus sliding and cantilever gates where a swing gate will not fit.

Openers: solar or wired openers, with keypad, remote or phone control.

Dumpster gates: a commercial dumpster enclosure needs an opaque gate, and we build those too.

West Fork Fence Rules Code & Permit Guide

West Fork’s code sets no height for an ordinary fence and asks for no permit under seven feet. Where it gets specific is near bluffs, in flood zones and around commercial sites. This is what the code says, and where it came from.

City CodeNo permit for a fence 7 feet or under. City Hall, (479) 839-2342.

How Tall Can My Fence Be?

West Fork’s zoning code does not set a number for an ordinary lot.

Is there a height limit?

Not for an ordinary residential fence. West Fork’s zoning code allows fences in any yard, subject to its limits on blocking visibility. Subdivision covenants can set a height the city does not, so we read yours before we quote.

Is there anywhere a limit does apply?

Near a bluff. In the bluff protection zone, fences can be no more than 8 feet tall and have to stay at least 30 feet back from the top of the bluff.

Permits

West Fork asks for a permit only above seven feet.

Do I need a permit for a 6-foot privacy fence?

No. West Fork’s building permit rule covers buildings, and the state residential code the city adopted exempts fences up to 7 feet from a building permit (Sec. 11.04.01 and 11.05.01). We still confirm with the Building Inspector before we build.

What if the fence is taller than 7 feet?

Then plan on a building permit from the city, (479) 839-2342. When a fence needs a permit, we pull it for you.

Bluffs And Flood Zones

The two places West Fork’s code gets specific about fences.

What are the rules near a bluff?

Stay 30 feet back. In the bluff protection zone, fences up to 8 feet, low timber or rock walls up to 8 feet and standard farm fences such as woven wire are allowed if they sit at least 30 feet from the top of the bluff.

What if my lot is in a flood zone?

Check the flood map first. West Fork’s flood rules count building a fence as development, and development in a mapped flood zone goes through the city’s floodplain rules before it goes up.

Corner Lots

Corners are where visibility matters most.

What about corner lots and driveways?

Keep sight lines clear. West Fork requires safe sight distances at intersections and access points (Sec. 14.13.03), and its yard rules make fences subject to limits on blocking visibility. We keep corner fences out of the sight triangle.

Commercial Screening

For businesses, West Fork’s code spells out what a screening fence has to be.

How does a dumpster have to be screened?

Completely, with an opaque fence or wall and an opaque gate. If you choose a fence instead of a wall, it has to be treated lumber or cedar, kept sealed and protected.

What about a vehicle repair or towing yard?

A 6-foot privacy fence. Partially dismantled or wrecked vehicles have to be screened behind a 6-foot privacy fence or kept in an enclosed building.

Pools

West Fork adopted the state code, which sends pools to the International Swimming Pool and Spa Code.

Does a pool need a permit?

Plan on one. The state residential code the city adopted exempts only small prefabricated pools under 24 inches deep, so an in-ground or full-size pool goes through the Building Inspector, and the barrier has to meet the rules below.

How tall does a pool fence have to be?

48 inches, measured on the outside of the fence, and that height has to hold for 3 feet out from the fence so nothing outside becomes a step up.

How big can the gaps be?

Smaller than a 4-inch ball. No opening may let a 4-inch sphere through, and the gap under the fence can be no more than 2 inches over grass or gravel, or 4 inches over concrete.

Can I use chain link around a pool?

Only small mesh. Chain link openings can be no larger than 1-3/4 inches, so standard 2-inch mesh does not qualify. We use 1-1/4-inch pool mesh.

Does it matter which side the rails are on?

Yes. If the tops of the horizontal rails are less than 45 inches apart, the rails go on the pool side and pickets can be no more than 1-3/4 inches apart. With rails 45 inches or more apart, pickets can be up to 4 inches apart.

What does the gate need?

Self-closing and self-latching. It must open away from the pool and take a lock, with the latch release at least 54 inches up unless the release is on the pool side. On a double gate, one leaf stays secured in place.
