Modern Horizontal Fences
Clean Lines. Built to Stay Straight.
A horizontal fence turns a privacy fence into part of your home's design. The boards run parallel to the ground instead of up and down, which gives a clean, modern look that pairs well with newer homes, pools and patios.
Because horizontal boards span from post to post, the framing matters more than it does on a vertical fence. Every horizontal gate we build gets a metal frame and metal posts so it stays level, and a horizontal fence is a great candidate for our steel post upgrade.
Kismet Fence is a locally owned Licensed Contractor, No. 0446811126, and every fence we build is backed by our lifetime workmanship warranty.
Horizontal Wood Fence Installation in Northwest Arkansas
Wood. Cedar is the natural fit for horizontal boards. It's lighter and more stable than pine, so long boards are less likely to twist or cup, and it takes a stain beautifully. Most of the horizontal fences in our gallery below are cedar, and several are stained. Pressure-treated pine is an option when budget comes first.
Height. We build horizontal fences at standard privacy height and taller, including 8-foot builds. Check your town's limits in our fence permit guide and your HOA's rules in our HOA approval guide. If your town requires a permit, we pull it for you.
Gates. Horizontal gates are built on a metal frame with metal posts, standard on every wood gate we build, so the boards stay level and the gate doesn't sag.
Cost. A horizontal fence costs more than a standard side-by-side privacy fence because it takes more material and more careful framing. Our fence calculator prices horizontal as its own style, so you can see the difference for your yard. See every option side by side on our wood fence page.
Horizontal Fence Questions
Does a horizontal fence cost more?
Yes. A horizontal fence costs more than a standard side-by-side privacy fence because it uses more material and takes more careful framing to keep long boards straight. Our fence calculator shows the difference for your yard.
What's the best wood for a horizontal fence?
Cedar. It's lighter and more stable than pine, so long horizontal boards are less likely to twist or cup, and it takes a stain beautifully. Pressure-treated pine can be used when budget comes first.
What is a vented top?
A band of spaced boards along the top of the fence. It lets light and air through up high while the solid section below keeps your privacy, and it keeps a tall fence from feeling like a wall.
Can I get a gate that matches?
Yes. We build horizontal gates to match the fence, on a metal frame with metal posts so the gate stays square and doesn't sag.
How tall can a horizontal fence be?
We've built them from standard privacy height up to 8 feet. Height limits vary by town, so check our fence permit guide first. If your town requires a permit, we pull it for you.
